Secretary Roberta Gassman leads DWD, which is the state agency charged
with building and strengthening Wisconsin's workforce. State Begins Work Immediately to Process Retroactive Extension Payments under Aggressive Timetable
Department of Workforce Development (DWD) Secretary Roberta Gassman today thanked President Obama for signing into law an extension of federal Unemployment Insurance (UI) benefits. The extension, which President Obama signed into law this afternoon, provides a critical lifeline to unemployed Wisconsin workers.

On Thursday, July 22, Secretary Gassman visited Mid-State Technical College (MSTC) in Wisconsin Rapids, where she highlighted the $4.55 million WIA funding that Governor Doyle announced in early July that will help thousands of workers gain skills to succeed in the future economy.
WIA-funded grants supported training for approximately 33,000 workers last year through partnerships with area Workforce Development Boards, including the North Central Wisconsin Workforce Development Board.
During her visit, Secretary Gassman met with a variety of former and current dislocated workers, including Michelle Weronke, a WIA Adult services recipient who is studying nursing at MSTC and recently was hired as an LPN.

On Thursday, July 8, during a visit to the Wisconsin Regional
Training Partnership facility in Milwaukee, Governor Doyle announced
$4.55 million in federal Workforce Investment Act (WIA) funding for
programs that will prepare Wisconsin workers and employers to
compete in the future economy.
The WIA funding will build on the $5.89 million in Workforce Investment grants Governor Doyle announced last year – representing a $10 million total investment. Approximately 33,000 workers received training last year through the funding, which was boosted by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
As part of the $10 million workforce investment, the Governor
awarded a $444,961 Industry Partnership Training and Partnership
Support Award to the Milwaukee Area Workforce Investment Board
(MAWIB). Additionally, the Governor awarded $97,819 in Wisconsin
Industry Partnership planning grants to five regional workforce
development boards.
