About the Bay Area WDA

Bay Area Wisc MapThe Bay Area is made up of 10 counties in the Northeastern area of the State of Wisconsin. The counties include Brown, Door, Florence, Kewaunee, Manitowoc, Marinette, Menominee, Oconto, Shawano, and Sheboygan. Two of the counties in the area are designated as metropolitan statistical areas (MSA).

Brown County is the larger of the two MSA's in the area and has approximately 40 percent of the labor force and employment in the WDA. It makes up about 37 percent of the population for the Bay Area, and is near the geographical center of the region. Manufacturing makes up just over 18 percent of the employment, with the predominant industry being paper making, both in scale of numbers and salary. In 2005, the Green Bay MSA will include two additional counties to reflect economic linkages and commuting patterns between Brown County and Oconto and Kewaunee Counties. The Green Bay MSA has more jobs within its county borders than it has workers in the labor force and relies on surrounding counties to provided additional workers to commute to the county for employment.

Sheboygan County is the other MSA, and is slightly less than one half the size of Brown County in employment and labor force size. Its the southern most county in the area. Approximately 40 percent of the county's employment is in the manufacturing sector, double the statewide average. In 2004, the county will host the PGA Championship at one of its nationally renown golf courses.

Population estimates for 2003 put the population of the area at 615,322, an increase of 2.61 percent since the 2000 Census. In 2002, the labor force in the Bay Area was 341,399 with an unemployment rate of 5.7 percent. Employment in nonfarm wage and salary (nfws) averaged 321,978 for the year.
